Hardware New iPhone 3G unveiled, packs in GPS, 8GB $199, 16GB $299

Arriving in early July, the new "iPhone 3G" will sell for hundreds less than the original and-as expected-will come equipped with GPS and access to AT&T's speedy HSDPA network. Also: A new version of Mac OS X is on the way, along with a major revamp of Apple's .Mac online service.

It's real, it's thinner (at the edges, at least), and, truth be told ... it looks an awful lot like the original iPhone, from the front anyway. A couple of key changes, however: The headphone jack is now flush with the case-so no more need for a headset adapter-and the back panel is now glossy black plastic, which looks good, but may well be more susceptible to scratches than the original brushed-metal version.

So that's how the new iPhone looks. What's inside? As expected, 3G and GPS, good for turn-by-turn directions. Nice, but we'd heard rumors of videoconferencing-which, judging from the lack of a front-facing camera on the iPhone 3G, isn't in the cards....more

Speculation over the features of the new 3G iPhone is reaching fever pitch, as the world eagerly awaits the gadget's unveiling at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference later today. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is expected to launch the new and improved version of the iPhone in his keynote speech in San Francisco. Apple has already confirmed some changes to the iPhone's exterior, such as tapered edges and a glossy plastic backing. Meanwhile, some pictures of what appears to be the new version of the touch-screen handset have been leaked on to the internet....more
 
   

Hardware Samsung Launches iPhone Lookalike - Omnia

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Korean technology group Samsung (005930.KS) launched a new touchscreen smartphone on Monday, hours before Apple (AAPL.O) Chief Executive Steve Jobs was expected to announce a new version of the iPhone. Like the iPhone, Samsung's Omnia aims to make Internet browsing easy, and has a wide screen for viewing video as well as music capabilities and a 5 megapixel camera. It runs on Microsoft (MSFT.O) Windows Mobile software. The original iPhone transformed the market for so-called smartphones with computer-like functions a year ago and the industry is eager to see whether Apple can repeat its success with a new version, expected to run on faster, 3G networks....more

Industry Symbian Reports First Quarter Results for 2008

With our customers shipping a total of 18.5 million Symbian mobile phones through over 250 major network operators globally in the quarter, we have now surpassed the 200 million cumulative shipment mark. In fact, by the end of the quarter, a cumulative total of 206 million Symbian mobile phones have been shipped by the world’s leading handset manufacturers and each of our licensees has shipped a new Symbian mobile phone model since the beginning of 2008.

The world’s five leading handset vendors announced nine products based on Symbian OS v9 during Q1 2008 including UIQ-based Motorola Z10, Sony Ericsson G700 and Sony Ericsson G900 as well as S60-based LG KT610, Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 6220 classic and Samsung G810. Hardware AT&T Launches the GPS-Enabled BlackBerry Pearl 8110 Smartphone

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the launch of the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8110 smartphone, which includes built-in global positioning system (GPS) support for location-based applications and services. Combined with navigation and mapping applications such as AT&T Navigator, the handset provides turn-by-turn voice and on-screen directions with colorful 3-D moving maps that can be used in vehicles or while walking. AT&T Navigator also alerts users through voice and on-screen prompts to traffic slowdowns and incidents along their programmed travel route, and it provides customers with the option to choose an alternative route.

Hardware Acer Announces First Smartphone Powered By Windows Mobile

Acer will likely launch its first smartphone near the end of this year or early next year and it will be a Microsoft-based device, the president of the company said Wednesday. Smartphones will represent as much as 10 percent of Acer's revenue in the next few years, said Gianfranco Lanci, president of Acer, at the company's first quarter investors' conference in Taipei. People on the lookout for such a device should remember Acer, the world's third-largest PC vendor, owns several brands now, including Gateway of the U.S. and Packard Bell in Europe. Lanci said any smartphone launched by the company could enter the market under any of the brands it owns....more
